Will it Pass Inspection in My County?
Coastal counties have specific wind-load requirements, and they vary — sometimes dramatically — from one jurisdiction to the next. Miami-Dade's standards are different from Lee County's, which are different from Galveston's. We've pre-mapped the requirements for hurricane-prone counties across Florida, Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, the Carolinas, Alabama, and Mississippi. Click the button below to see exactly what your county requires and to confirm we can provide engineer-stamped drawings calibrated to those specs.

Is this pergola actually hurricane-rated, or is "hurricane-resistant" just marketing language?
It's an engineering claim, not a marketing one. The Luxury Pergola is built to commercial spec from heavy-gauge aluminum, anchored to your slab or deck per engineered drawings, and rated for sustained winds well above the threshold of a Category 5 hurricane when installed to spec. The 2024 storm season is the most recent real-world test: five named hurricanes hit our installed base across the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, and we received zero damage claims. Engineering documentation is available on request.
What specifically happens to the louvered roof during a hurricane?
Before a storm, close the louvers close into a locked, flat position. This is the strongest configuration for the roof system. In that closed position, the louvers act as a single rigid panel rather than independent blades, which is what gives the structure its wind rating. You don't need to remove panels, take down components, or do any disassembly. If you have an integrated weather sensor (optional), the louvers will close automatically when wind speed crosses your set threshold.
Will my homeowner's insurance cover damage to or from the pergola?
That depends on your policy and your carrier, and we'd be lying if we told you otherwise. What we can tell you: because our pergola is engineered, permitted, and anchored as a permanent structure (not a temporary canopy or shade sail) most homeowners' policies treat it the same as any other permanent outdoor structure, like a sunroom, a deck cover, or an attached porch. That generally results in better coverage than soft-canopy or kit-built pergolas, which some insurers exclude. We recommend calling your agent before purchase with the engineering documentation in hand; we'll provide it.
Will this pass inspection in my county?
In most coastal counties, yes, but the only honest answer is "tell us your address and we'll confirm." Hurricane-zone counties (Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Galveston, Harris, Charleston, etc.) have specific wind-load requirements, and we provide engineer-stamped drawings calibrated to your local code. We've successfully permitted installations across Florida, Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, the Carolinas, Alabama, and Mississippi. If your county requires anything we don't have, we'll tell you that too.
Do I need a contractor, or can I install this myself?
There are no requirements that would keep you from installing your pergola yourself. As with any DIY project, it all comes down to your comfort with construction and permitting. That said, if you're not comfortable doing the work yourself, we can help you find installers in most coastal markets, and our pricing is direct-to-consumer specifically so that even with a contractor's install fee, you typically pay less than the dealer-installed alternative.
How long from order to installation?
Typically four to six weeks from order to delivery. After that, it's up to you and your schedule for installation. For pre-hurricane-season delivery (installed by June 1), we recommend ordering by mid-March.
How is this different from a $5,000 pergola from a big-box store or online?
Almost entirely. Big-box pergolas are typically thin-gauge aluminum kits designed for shade in calm weather, with non-structural fasteners, no wind-load engineering, and warranties that exclude weather damage. Ours is a commercial-grade, engineered, permanent structure built from heavy-gauge aluminum to the same spec dealers install for $40,000+. The honest framing: if your goal is shade on a calm afternoon, the $5K product is fine. If your goal is a permanent outdoor structure that survives the next hurricane, it isn't. And the $5K pergola is what you'll see in news footage after the storm.
What about a dealer-installed pergola? Is yours really comparable?
Yes, and we'll be specific about why. The structural spec, the louver mechanism, the motor systems, and the wind ratings are comparable to the major dealer-installed brands. We use the same class of commercial-grade aluminum and the same caliber of motors. Where we differ is the go-to-market model: dealer-installed brands sell through regional showrooms that mark up the product 40% or more to cover sales staff, design centers, and territory exclusivity. We sell direct, manufacture in Indiana, and pass the savings to you. For a fair comparison, ask any dealer for their exact aluminum gauge, motor specifications, and warranty terms, then ask us the same questions.
What happens if a hurricane damages my pergola anyway?
No pergola warranty will cover damage due to "Acts of God," which includes hurricanes. Repair and replacement in these cases is typically covered by homeowners insurance policies. That said, we've never had a customer claim a structural-failure from a hurricane, and we don't expect them to. But if your pergola were to sustain hurricane damage, we can help you get necessary parts for repairs.
